Daddy, Kelly, and I went to Lincoln, AL, to see Aunt Gracie. We try to visit her at least once a year. I have wonderful memories of spending time at Aunt Gracie’s house while growing up. It seems that every year me and at least one (or more) of my siblings would spend a week at her house. It was wonderful and I just loved it. Today we talked about old times, caught up with family members, and just had a wonderful visit. I found out things I’d never known before! Folks as nice and warm as Aunt Gracie should live forever!
Here are a few of my memories of time spent at AG and UM’s house:
1. Playing with Alice’s Barbies. She had EVERYTHING! Barbie, Madge (Barbie’s friend before Skipper), Ken, all kinds of clothes and accessories. I remember one time UM coming home and commenting that his bedroom had been turned into some kind of ‘Barbie Heaven’ while he was gone!!!!
2. Coming home from a picnic at the Birmingham City Zoo and finding Chuck and Jimmy in a fight. Yes, a physical fight. I thought Jimmy would KILL Chuck, but AG intervened and broke it up. Chuck had a torn shirt and Jimmy’s motorcycle (I think I have that right) was lying on the ground. It seems that Jimmy used the gasoline in his motorcycle that Chuck was going to use in the lawn mower.
3. Finding a Playboy magazine in the magazine rack in the bathroom. It was shoved right in the middle of ALL the mags (and there were a lot). I wasn’t looking to find something, I just stuck my hand down in the middle of the stack with the intention of reading whatever I grabbed. Of course I never imagined finding anything like that. I’d never even seen anything like that before. Since I’d never seen anything like that, I had to share it with my siblings. So, we (I honestly cannot remember if it was Sue or Kay or both of them) took the magazine into the bedroom and were just amazed at what I had found. Aunt Gracie found us reading that magazine when she came to tuck us into bed. Of course she confiscated it. My next memory is of passing the living room the and seeing UM holding court with Chuck and Jimmy. The were both standing (as if at attention) with their hands behind their backs! I bet they hated us!
I have loads of other memories of time spent with Aunt Gracie (going to Ben Franklin’s, the wonderful aromas of her kitchen and the huge tree at the back door, playing house, playing with the bumper pool table downstairs, going to the lake, swimming in the lake, catching fish, Kay seeing the huge frog {that turned out the be a bullfrog}, willow flies covering the house…. I could go on and on). She is a wonderful lady and I am proud to claim her as my aunt.
So, in Jimmy’s tradition — siblings, please tell me of any memories you have of spending time with AG or UM at either their Gentilly Drive house or the house at Logan Martin Lake.
