I was reminded today of an event from the 3rd grade that holds a special place in my heart and I thought I’d share it.
This happened early one morning, before class actually started - it may have been right after roll call. I was sitting at my desk when I suddenly realized, with that sagging sinking feeling deep in my stomach, that I’d left my lunch at home. Lunch was the highlight of my day and now I was faced with having to wait until I got home to have something to eat. For me that was devastating. Sure, lunch was a social time, but to me it was much more than that!
The teacher left room and, out of nowhere, my father strode into the classroom holding my lunch! I will never forget the happiness I felt when I saw Daddy. I jumped up, took my sack lunch from him, hugged and kissed him and told him I loved him. What a show of love it was for Daddy to see that I’d forgotten my lunch and to make a special trip to the school to bring it to me. I felt loved!
Daddy left the room and, to my horror, one guy made fun of me and the entire class laughed. Talk about going from the top of the world to the bottom! Who wants to be the subject of ridicule? I burst into tears. When the teacher returned to the room, she took me aside to find the source of my tears. I explained what happened and she took me to the teacher’s lounge and bought me some M&Ms and a coke.
I debated about telling the last part of that story since the most important part is how loved and special and cared for I felt when Daddy brought my lunch to me. Is it any wonder I consider him the best father in the world?
