Christopher took the test last night to become an umpire! Yes, he passed. He said it was more of a ‘group test’ and not terribly difficult. Starting in about 3 weeks, he will be officiating games! I’m thinking about going just to heckle him.
Christopher is playing summer-league American Legion baseball. The team is made up of Brewer players and the season is going pretty much like the regular season did. Sigh. All games are double-headers which makes for a long night.
Last night we played West Morgan at West Morgan. We lost the first game 10-9. Christopher played short-stop and did very well. I think he struck out once and had a couple of base hits. I’m not clear on this because at this point all the games are running together in my head.
Fast-forward to the second game. Christopher pitched and it was a good one…. he pitched well. We were up in the score, then down, then up. In the bottom of the final inning we were leading with a score of 5-4. We had 2 outs with the tying run on 2nd and the go-ahead run on 3rd. All we needed was one out and the game would be over
Christopher pitches and the batter hits…. it’s a grounder, and it goes BETWEEN THE LEGS OF THE 2nd BASEMAN. Game lost…. Christopher was DISGUSTED. He takes it so hard when they lose, especially when he’s had a good game.

It hurts when your team struggles to win….. but when you come from behind and tie the game in the last inning, you begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Until the officials call the game because it’s 11:30 at night. Where is the justice?
Christopher’s American Legion team (summer ball) played a double-header last night. They lost the first one by quite a margin. The second game, which he pitched, was looking much better. It was a struggle, but they came from behind (by 2 runs) to tie the game at 5 in the 5th inning (the last inning in an American Legion double-header).
So what if it was 11:15 at night….. so what if it was a bit chilly….. the boys wanted to play and they wanted to win. They could feel it. They could taste it. When the officials called the game, Christopher was the first one to argue that they deserved to finish. He begged his coach. It was all in vain, however. The game was over. He was so mad that when the final decision was made, he turned and hurled the baseball he was holding at the dugout. I overhead him tell his coach later that ‘you don’t do that….. we fought from behind…. we should have played.’ And he’s right. Where’s the justice?
