On Christmas Eve, Jennifer came over so we could cook. We put together the traditional 3-day cornbread dressing (Granny’s recipe, of course) and we made 2 pecan pies. We decided to mix the pies at the same time (in separate bowls) so we could put them in the oven at the same time and one wouldn’t settle more than the other. As we started, I remarked that it would be nice if we had another mixer. A minute later, I looked at Jennifer and said “I know where a mixer is…..under the Christmas tree (Jennifer does a lot of Christmas shopping with me and she already knew I was giving her a mixer). Her eyes lit up and we ran to the Christmas tree. Under my guidance, she found the correct package and we carefully opened one end of it with a seam ripper, sliding box slid out of the paper. We took the mixer into the kitchen, made the pies, returned the mixer to the box and sealed it with a piece of tape. No one was the wiser!
We confessed our story Christmas morning after she opened the mixer. What a great Christmas memory.
In our family the tradition of saying “Christmas Gift” on Christmas morning has been passed on for generations. Saying “Christmas Gift” to someone before anyone else said it made you “the winner”. The winner of what we were never certain, but among siblings, it’s always best to be the the winner! According to Phrase Finder, this tradition is:
“A greeting used on Christmas morning, with the first person saying it traditionally receiving a gift. The custom, which has been traced back to as early as 1844, is no longer observed but ‘Christmas gift!’, which used to be a far more popular Christmas greeting than ‘Merry Christmas!’ is still heard among older people.” From “Whistlin’ Dixie: A Dictionary of Southern Expressions” by Robert Hendrickson (Pocket Books, New York, 1993).
The part about “no longer observed” is obviously incorrect, but the rest seems accurate. So, on this Christmas morning, passed down from my Granny to me and my siblings, and to our kids , CHRISTMAS GIFT!
Yes, it’s that time again - THE DAY AFTER THANKSGIVING!!! As is the tradition in our house, we went shopping. I picked Jennifer, Kelly, and Little-Kelly up at Jennifer’s house at 3:30 a.m. Yes, that was 3:30 a.m. We arrived at J.C. Penney’s a little before 4:00 and our day of shopping began! Before the sun even rose, we had been to Penney’s, Chick-Fil-A, Sears, Home Depot, Target, Dick’s, and Goody’s. Yes, all that before sunrise! We found a few good deals, but mainly we just had a great time. We ran into Dennis, Gay, and Jessica twice and then met them for a pre-arranged luncheon at Rosie’s Cantina! As usual, we had a great time. We did quit a bit early, however….. I was home by 1:00 p.m. I took a two-hour nap (Jennifer took a 3-hour nap) and have been on the go ever since.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and a GREAT shopping day after!

Jim and I went to Nashville yesterday. Our original reason for going was to go on a ghost tour. Before the tour, we walked around the District, had dinner at theHard Rock Cafe, and visited the Parthenon, Nashville.
